If your Miele dishwasher is noisy, the cause usually depends on when the noise happens: a rattle during the wash is often a loose item or a spray arm hitting a dish, a grinding or buzzing at drain time points to something in the pump area, a humming that never stops points to the circulation pump, and a knock when the dishwasher fills can be the water supply. Miele describes its dishwashers as quiet or whisper-quiet in the model specifications, so a new, loud sound is worth investigating. This guide sorts the noises by phase, shows the safe checks you can do and says when to stop and call a technician.
Why is my Miele dishwasher noisy?
A healthy Miele wash phase is a steady low hum, with the spray arms audible as a soft rhythmic sweep, as our guide to the circulation pump codes puts it. Anything that changes that pattern is the clue. Write down when the noise occurs: at the start while it fills, in the main wash, while it drains or in the drying phase. The phase narrows the cause better than the sound alone, and it is the first thing a technician will ask.
Our model pages describe the G-series dishwashers as quiet operation or whisper-quiet operation, for example the G 5056 SCVi and the G 7156 SCVi SF, but they do not list a sound level in decibels. So we cannot give you a number that counts as too loud. Judge it against how your own machine sounded when it was new, and treat a sudden change as the warning.
What causes rattling or clanking during the wash?
Loading is the usual suspect. A glass touching the wall of the tub, a cup that has turned over, loose cutlery in the basket or a tall item that hits a spray arm will all rattle or clank. Stop the cycle, open the door and look. Check that each spray arm turns freely by hand, that no item sticks through the rack, and that small items cannot fall through. Our Miele dishwasher tips say to load so that tall items do not block the spray arms, and to put plastics where they cannot cup water and fall.
If the rattle comes from outside the tub, the dishwasher may not be level or the side panels may touch the cabinets. Our Miele dishwasher installation guide covers leveling and fixing the unit, and it is a good starting point if the noise began after a move or a remodel.

What does grinding or rattling at drain time mean?
Noise while draining usually comes from the filter area and the drain pump. Broken glass, a fruit pit or a piece of label can reach the pump and rattle against it, and a clogged filter makes the pump struggle. Switch the dishwasher off and let it cool. Take out the lower rack and clean the triple filter as shown in our filter cleaning guide, looking into the sump with a flashlight. Wear gloves and look rather than feel: broken glass hides there and does not announce itself.
If the dishwasher also leaves water behind, read our guide to a Miele dishwasher that won’t drain. Do not remove the pump yourself. A blocked impeller grinds or rattles, then goes quiet as the motor gives up, according to our pump guide.
What if the pump hums, surges or never stops?
A surging sound, where the pitch rises and falls, can mean the control keeps correcting the circulation pump speed, as our pump codes guide describes. A pump that will not stop leaves the machine humming after the cycle has finished, sometimes with the door already open. These are signs of a pump or drive problem, not a loading issue. Try a power reset: switch the machine off at the wall for two minutes, restore power and run a short program. If the noise or a code returns, stop using the dishwasher and book a visit.
A noisy dishwasher that also leaks, trips the breaker or shows a code such as F70 needs attention at once. Switch the breaker off from a dry spot if you see water near electrical parts, and read about water on the floor and F70.
Are some sounds normal?
Yes. You will hear water filling and draining, the pump humming and the spray arms sweeping. Models with AutoOpen drying, such as the G 7156 SCVi SF, open the door at the end of the cycle for drying, which can make a small noise. Small sounds as the load settles after a cycle are not unusual, but our pages do not list them, so judge them against how your machine sounded when new. Keeping the jets clear and the softener salt filled helps the wash stay smooth, as our water softener guide explains.
We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer. Our Miele dishwasher repair page explains how a visit works, and you can schedule a visit online if the noise persists.
