Miele dishwasher machine care is a short routine: clean the triple filter every few weeks, keep the softener salt and rinse aid topped up, clear the spray arm jets, wipe the door seal and run a hot empty program now and then to clear grease from the interior. Our Miele dishwasher tips guide lists these habits, and they cover most of what makes a G-series dishwasher cloudy, smelly or slow to drain. This guide puts them in order, explains what each one prevents and shows where ordinary upkeep ends and a technician begins.
What does Miele dishwasher machine care include?
Think of it as five small jobs that protect the water path: the filter, the spray arms, the softener, the rinse aid and the interior. Our Miele dishwasher tips summarize the principle: keep the softener salt and rinse aid topped up, clean the triple filter regularly, run a hot program with the machine empty now and then and load so tall items do not block the spray arms. Each habit is small, and together they stop the film, odor and drainage complaints that otherwise end in a service call.
Miele G-series dishwashers move water through a filter, a circulation pump and spray arms, and they report problems as F-codes. Machine care keeps that path clear, so the pump and the sensors have less to complain about. Before you start, switch the dishwasher off and let the door and the water cool.
How do you clean the triple filter?
The triple filter sits in the base of the tub and catches food, glass and grit. Our filter cleaning guide gives the order: take out the lower rack, turn the cylindrical filter lock anticlockwise and lift the assembly out, separate the coarse and fine parts, and rinse them under running water with a soft brush on the mesh. Wipe the recess and check the drain pump opening underneath for glass or pits, then refit the filter and turn it clockwise until it locks. A loose filter can cause a fault or a leak.
Do the job every few weeks, more often if you do not scrape plates. A filter that re-clogs within days suggests food is not being scraped off before loading. Wear gloves if you suspect glass, and do not reach into the pump opening with your hand.

How do you look after the spray arms?
If dishes come out gritty or unevenly clean, check the spray arms. Our guide on a Miele dishwasher not cleaning says to remove the spray arms and clear each jet with a toothpick, since seeds and labels block them. Rinse the arms, check that they turn freely by hand and put them back so they click into place. Do this occasionally, and whenever the top rack dishes stay dirty.
Loading helps too. Avoid overloading and nesting items that shadow each other from the spray, and put plastics where they cannot cup water. Our dishwasher not cleaning guide covers the full list of causes, in the order to check them.
What about the water softener, salt and rinse aid?
Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener that needs reactivation salt. Our water softener guide explains that an empty reservoir leaves a chalky film from hard-water minerals, that you should use dishwasher reactivation salt and not table salt, and that the hardness setting should match your local water. Screw the salt cap down firmly: a loose cap can leak, which our pages link to codes F86 and F70, and a failed softener valve is linked to F87.
Keep the rinse aid topped up as well. Our tips guide notes that empty rinse aid causes wet dishes. If your glasses are cloudy, check the salt, the hardness setting and the rinse aid before you blame the machine. A white film is usually hard water, and you can often wipe it away with a cloth once the salt and the setting are right.
How do you clear grease and odors from the interior?
Run a hot program with the machine empty now and then, as our tips guide suggests, to clear grease from the interior. Check the manual for your model for a dedicated cleaning or machine care program, and for which cleaner it allows. Do not mix cleaning products, and do not pour anything into the machine that the manual does not name. Wipe the door seal and the edge of the door with a damp cloth, and leave the door ajar after a cycle so the interior can air out.
For the heating side of the machine, our heater codes guide explains F14, F24 and F25. If water stays in the tub after you clean the filter, see dishwasher won’t drain F11.
When does machine care stop and repair start?
Call a technician if the display shows a code that returns after a power reset, if water stays in the tub after cleaning, if you see water on the floor or if the dishwasher trips the breaker. Switch the breaker off from a dry spot if you see water near electrical parts, and do not open the base panel yourself. Our repair or replace guide helps with the next decision.
