Whether to repair or replace a failed Miele dishwasher circulation pump depends mostly on the age and overall condition of the machine. On a sound, reasonably young Miele, a pump repair usually makes sense because the rest of the dishwasher has plenty of life left. On a much older unit, or one that is showing several faults at once, a circulation pump is the kind of major component that can tip the decision toward replacement. This guide explains what the pump does, which codes point to it, what to rule out first and how to weigh the decision once a technician has diagnosed it.
What does the Miele dishwasher circulation pump do?
The circulation pump is the motor that drives water up to the spray arms. According to our guide to the circulation pump codes, water collects in the sump under the filter, the pump lifts it under pressure, and the slide shutter steers it to the lower arm, the upper arm or the third-level spray bar. Everything the machine does during a wash depends on that flow: the heater does not switch on without it, and the wash pressure that removes food comes from it.
The pump is speed-controlled, because different wash phases need different pressures and the control checks constantly that the motor delivers what it asked for. When the measured speed and the commanded speed disagree, a code appears. That is why one part can produce several different numbers on the display.
Which codes point to the circulation pump?
Our pump codes guide describes five codes for one component. F67 means the pump is not holding the commanded speed, F68 means it will not stop, F69 means it is blocked, F78 points to the electronics that drive it and F53 means the speed signal is lost. You can read more on the F67 page and the F68 page. The codes send many people to filters, spray arms and detergent, but the code itself points at the motor, not the dishes.
The codes also differ in how likely a part replacement is. According to the guide, F68 is far more often a drive or control problem than a motor problem, and F69 is a physical obstruction, such as glass, a fruit pit or a piece of label that got past the filter. A blocked pump is often a cleaning job, not a replacement.

What should you rule out before paying for a pump?
Do the safe checks first. Switch the dishwasher off, take out the lower rack and clean the triple filter as shown in our filter cleaning guide, checking the sump for glass or pits. Our pump codes guide says to check the sump for glass first, then stop. A blocked filter can starve the pump, and a stray shard or label can stall the impeller. Wear gloves, because glass can be hidden in the sump, and do not put your hand into the pump opening.
Then try a power reset: switch the appliance off at the wall for a minute and restore power. If the code returns straight away, treat it as a real fault. Listen too: a healthy wash phase is a steady low hum with the spray arms making a soft sweep. Grinding, rattling or silence points to the pump.
When does repair make sense?
Our Miele dishwasher repair or replace guide says that a common part on an otherwise healthy Miele almost always favors repair, because these machines are built for long service. A circulation pump on a young or mid-life dishwasher that otherwise cleans, dries and runs well is a good case for repair. A pump that is only blocked, or only needs its electronics attended to, is even more so.
Ask for the quote in writing and weigh it against the age and condition of the machine; a technician can tell you what part is actually at fault before you commit. Many appliances written off as dead need only a common part, while some that look like an easy fix hide a bigger problem, which is why a diagnosis is worth having first.
When does replacement make more sense?
The same guide leans toward replacement when a major component such as the circulation pump, the control board or a cracked sump fails on a much older unit, or when several problems appear close together and suggest general wear. Consider also whether parts are still readily available, and whether a newer model would give you features or efficiency you want. If you are comparing models, our G7000 versus G5000 comparison shows what each line offers.
A pump is not a do-it-yourself part. It sits in the water path with the heater and the sensors, and it needs electrical testing, so switch the breaker off from a dry spot if you see water near electrical parts and do not open the base panel yourself.
