TL;DR: A Miele 18 inch dishwasher, the G 5482 SCVi SL, installs like a full-size built-in but in an 18-inch opening. Plan the water, drain and power connections before the machine slides in, and expect a smaller capacity.

A Miele 18 inch dishwasher installs in a narrow cabinet opening that is 18 inches wide instead of the usual 24, and the one on our model list is the G 5482 SCVi SL, a fully integrated, panel-ready compact model from the G 5000 line. The steps are the same as for a full-size built-in dishwasher, but the narrow space changes three things: how easy it is to reach the water and drain connections, how much cabinet panel and trim you have to work with and what you can fit inside once it is running.

Who needs an 18-inch Miele dishwasher?

An 18-inch dishwasher suits a kitchen that cannot spare a full 24 inches of cabinet width: a city apartment, a galley kitchen, a bar or butler’s pantry, a second dishwasher near the entertaining area or a household of one or two that runs a load only every few days. It holds fewer place settings than a 24-inch model, so a family of four that cooks every night is usually better served by a full-size machine. If you are weighing the two, our guide to the Miele G 7000 vs G 5000 dishwashers compares the full-size lines, and the specification sheet for the G 5482 SCVi SL gives the exact capacity.

What does the cabinet opening need to be?

The opening width, height and depth must match the dimensions in the installation instructions for your exact model, and the instructions also give the allowed range for the countertop height. Measure the width at the front and at the back of the cabinet, because side panels that are not square leave the dishwasher binding at one end. Check that the floor is level and solid, that the adjacent cabinet sides are straight and that there is room for the supply and drain lines to pass without kinking. A 24-inch standard opening cannot be shrunk to 18 inches without a filler panel and a finish that matches, so plan that with your cabinet maker before the dishwasher arrives.

If you are replacing an older compact dishwasher, check that the new one is the same width before you assume it will drop in; some older compact models had different cutouts.

Planning the water, drain and power points comes before the machine slides in.

Where do the water, drain and power connections go?

In a narrow cabinet there is very little room beside the dishwasher, so decide where each connection lives before the machine slides in. The water supply needs a shutoff valve within reach of the lower front, the drain hose has to leave the cabinet and go up to a high loop under the countertop or through an air gap, as local code requires, and the electrical supply needs an accessible junction or outlet in the position the instructions show. Run the hoses first, then slide the dishwasher in slowly while feeding them through, because a pinched hose is the most common installation fault in a compact opening.

Always switch off the breaker and close the water valve before connecting anything, and leave the final connection and test to a professional if you are not comfortable with water and electrical work. Our general Miele dishwasher installation guide lists the connection details that apply to every size.

How do you install and level a compact Miele dishwasher?

  1. Turn off power and water and clear the opening and the floor in front of it.
  2. Prepare the lines. Place the supply connection and the drain loop as the instructions show.
  3. Slide the dishwasher in carefully, feeding the hoses so they are not pinched or kinked.
  4. Level it using the adjustable feet until the machine does not rock, then check front to back with a level.
  5. Anchor it to the countertop underside or the cabinet sides as the instructions direct.
  6. Connect water, drain and power, and tighten each fitting.
  7. Fit the panel and the toe kick and adjust the door, following the panel steps for a Miele panel-ready model.
  8. Test. Run a short cycle and check every connection for leaks.

For the panel and the door spring adjustment, use the steps in the manual for your exact model, since the spring tension depends on the weight of your cabinet panel.

What fits inside an 18-inch dishwasher?

The G 5482 SCVi SL has the 3D MultiFlex tray on top and FlexLine adjustable baskets, which are the same racking ideas used in the full-size models, adapted to the smaller tub. Expect to fit everyday plates, bowls, cups and utensils, but not a stack of oversized platters or a full-size roasting pan. Plan to wash large items by hand. Loading tips for the racking are in our guide to Miele dishwasher tips, and the filter cleaning guide keeps the machine performing.

What should you check on the first run?

Run a short cycle with the toe kick off and watch each connection. Look under the machine for drips, listen for the pump and check that the door closes fully on the latch without catching on the panel or the neighboring cabinet. If the dishwasher does not start or reports a fault, our dishwasher won’t start page lists the checks. Check again after the first full week and after the first month, with a flashlight and a dry paper towel held under each connection. A leak found on day one is easy to fix, while a slow leak under a built-in compact dishwasher can go unnoticed and damage the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions
Does Miele make an 18-inch dishwasher?
Yes. Our model list shows the G 5482 SCVi SL, a compact 18-inch, fully integrated, panel-ready dishwasher from the G 5000 line.
Can I replace a 24-inch dishwasher with an 18-inch one?
Only with a filler panel and cabinet work to close the gap. The new dishwasher needs an opening matched to its dimensions.
How many place settings does it hold?
Fewer than a 24-inch model. Check the specification sheet for the figure for your exact model.
Do I need a plumber to install it?
If the supply or drain is not already at the right spot, yes. Wiring and plumbing changes should be done by a professional.
