The Miele speed oven repair or replace decision is usually simple: a failed oven is worth repairing when the fault is a single part, the oven is under about twelve years old and the cavity and door are in good condition, because a speed oven is a specialty built-in whose cutout and finish are hard to match. It is not worth repairing when the microwave section has failed on an old unit and you would be happy with a good convection oven, or when several parts have failed at once. Because the microwave side holds a dangerous charge, only a technician should open it.
What goes wrong in a Miele speed oven?
A speed oven has two cooking systems in one cavity, so it can fail in two ways. The convection side has the same parts as any oven: a heating element, a fan, a temperature sensor and a door seal. The microwave side adds a generator, a high-voltage power supply and door switches that make sure the microwave stops when the door opens. The most common signs are an oven that stays cool, food that does not heat in microwave mode, a fault code on the display or a door that no longer closes or latches properly. Our Miele oven not heating guide and oven sensor codes guide cover the convection side.
Age and use matter too: an oven used daily for years has worn its door hinges and seal more than one used for occasional reheating, and a technician can read that wear in minutes. The sentence that matters most, though, is that the two sides fail independently. A speed oven with a dead microwave section can still be a perfectly good convection oven, and that changes the decision.
How do you find out which side has failed?
Run the oven in a convection-only mode with a thermometer inside and see whether it reaches temperature. Then, with a cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl, try a short microwave mode and see whether the water warms. If convection works and the microwave does not, the microwave section has failed; if convection fails too, the heating system or the control is involved. Do not run the microwave mode with the cavity empty, and stop if you see sparks, smell burning or hear a loud hum. Write down any code shown on the display; our flashing F guide explains how to read it.

When is repairing a Miele speed oven the better choice?
Repair makes sense when the fault is a single, identifiable part, such as a heating element, a fan, a sensor, a door switch or a latch, and the rest of the oven is healthy. It also makes sense when the oven sits in a custom cabinet with trim and a cutout that suit it exactly, which is true of most built-in ovens of this kind. The H 7770 BM is a 30-inch unit and the H 7240 BM AM is a 24-inch unit, and a replacement has to match the width or the cabinet has to change. A repair that restores the oven for years is almost always cheaper than a new unit plus cabinet work.
A speed oven also has features that people grow attached to: the wireless probe, the MasterChef programs and the Moisture Plus steam bursts. If you rely on them, replacing the oven with a plain one is a loss as well as a cost.
When is replacing it the better choice?
- The microwave section has failed on an old oven and you would be content with a good convection oven, or you are happy to use a countertop microwave instead.
- Several parts have failed, such as the control, the fan and the door switches, in an oven that is more than about twelve years old.
- The cavity is damaged, with rust, arcing marks or a cracked door glass.
- The oven no longer suits your cooking, and a combination steam oven or a standard wall oven would serve you better.
If you do replace it, take a look at our H 7770 BM speed oven guide and the Miele oven installation guide, which cover the cutout and the electrical needs for a new built-in.
What questions should you ask before approving a repair?
- Which side has failed, the convection or the microwave, and how was that confirmed?
- Is the part available for this exact model number, and how long will it take to arrive?
- What else is likely to wear out soon in an oven of this age?
- Does the repair carry a labor warranty on the work?
- What is the repair cost compared with a comparable new built-in and the cabinet work it needs?
Keep the model number, the serial number and any code from the display ready when you call, since a technician can check part availability for your exact oven before the visit. If the repair would cost more than about half of a comparable new oven, replacement usually wins. Below that, repairing usually does, as long as the rest of the oven is healthy. Our general Miele oven repair or replace guide applies the same rule to conventional ovens.
