Miele steam oven descaling is the routine that clears mineral scale out of the oven’s steam system so that it keeps making steam properly. Hard water leaves minerals behind every time it is heated, and over time they build up on the parts that make steam. Our oven tips guide says to descale a DGC combi-steam oven when it prompts, to protect the steam system. When the prompt appears, follow your owner’s manual: it names the descaling program, the product to use and the steps for your oven, and none of those should be improvised.
Why does a steam oven need descaling?
Tap water carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When water is heated into steam, the minerals stay behind and form a hard, pale crust called scale. In a kettle you can see it. In a steam oven it forms where you cannot see it: on the parts that heat the water and on the pipes and valves that carry it. Scale insulates heating parts, narrows passages and can make valves stick, so the oven makes less steam, takes longer or stops to show a message.
The harder your water, the faster this happens. Our oven tips guide says to descale on the prompt to protect the steam system, and our MultiSteam explainer describes how the steam cooking works. The same mineral effect is why a dishwasher has a water softener, which our softener guide explains.
Which Miele ovens need it?
On our site, the DGC models: the DGC 7780 and DGC 7785 at 30 inches wide, the DGC 7860 AM XXL and the DGC 7440 AM at 24 inches wide. Our pages list them as Generation 7000 combi-steam ovens with DualSteam combi cooking, M Touch controls and an AirClean catalyser, and describe the DGC 7785 as a plumbed combi-steam oven. The H 7880 BP is listed with Moisture Plus steam bursts and pyrolytic self-clean, and our pages do not say how or whether it needs descaling, so check your manual for any model that is not a DGC.
Whether your oven has a water container that you fill or a plumbed supply, and how the descaling reaches the steam system on each, is in the manual. Do not assume that the procedure for one DGC applies to another.
How do you know when it is time?
The oven tells you. Our oven tips guide says to descale when it prompts. Do not ignore the prompt for long, since the steam system is exactly the part scale harms. If you have hard water, expect the prompt to come around sooner, and check your manual for how the oven’s settings relate to your water hardness, since our pages do not give figures.
If the oven does not prompt but you notice weaker steam, longer cooking times or white crusting on the cavity, treat it as a sign and check the manual before anything else. A message on the display that you cannot identify can be a code: our oven F flashing and reset guide explains how to read it.

What should you prepare?
Read the manual’s descaling section from start to finish before you begin, so that nothing surprises you halfway. Get the descaling product that the manual names, because Miele specifies it for a reason, and do not substitute household acids, mixed products or cleaning sprays. Make sure the oven is cool, the cavity is empty of food and trays and you have time to let the program finish. Descaling uses the oven, so you cannot cook while it runs.
Have a cloth ready to wipe the cavity afterward, and a container if the manual tells you to drain or rinse any water. Follow the manual on whether to stay nearby during the program, and do not open the door unless the manual says it is safe. Hot steam and descaling liquid can burn.
What should you do afterward?
Follow the rinse steps in the manual, and wipe the cavity dry. Check that the water container or the supply is in its normal state and run the oven as usual. A first use of steam after descaling is often a good time to check that steam is coming out strongly and there are no new messages. Keep the door gasket clean too: our oven door seal maintenance guide explains what to check, because steam that leaks past a dirty seal is lost.
Record the date you descaled so that you know how long the interval was, and compare it next time. Our Miele oven tips list other habits that protect the oven.
What if descaling does not fix the problem?
If steam is still weak, if the oven shows a code or if water leaks from the door or the oven, stop. Scale is one cause of steam trouble, and the cause may be a part. Do not open the cabinet, do not try to reach the steam parts and do not repeat the program again and again. If water reaches an outlet or the cord, switch off the breaker at the panel while standing on a dry floor, and do not pull the plug out of a wet outlet.
